Nominations Sought for Thomas G. Scullen Leadership Award

Annual Award presented by the Appleton Education Foundation

APPLETON, WI—(Jan. 18, 2010) The Appleton Education Foundation (AEF) is seeking nominations for its third annual Thomas G. Scullen Leadership Award. The award honors a Fox Cities resident who is considered a leader in the field of education like its namesake, the late Thomas Scullen, who was an AEF founder and superintendent of the Appleton Area School District (AASD) until his passing in May 2007, at the age of 68. The award is intended to honor both Scullen’s memory and his commitment to the rich history of educational excellence in the AASD and the Fox Cities community.

“This award is more than a tribute to a great leader,” noted Julie Krause, AEF executive director. “It’s also designed to shine the spotlight on the high value Fox Cities residents place on education and the quality of life we enjoy here through the efforts of the many residents who have taken the lead in strengthening educational opportunities in our area.”

Nominations for the award will be accepted by the AEF through Feb. 19, 2010. Completed Nomination forms should be directed to the AEF, 122 E. College Ave., Suite 1-B, Appleton, WI 54911.

Nominees will be evaluated for recognition on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Strong history of sustained commitment to improving education in the Fox Cities
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other individuals and organizations to enhance education in the region
  • Demonstrated ability to be an advocate for education as a measure of overall quality of life in the region
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively to enhance education in the region.

A committee of Appleton Education Foundation board members, an Appleton Area School District Board of Education member, a district staff member, a Scullen Family representative, and two community representatives will review nominations and select the winner in March 2010.

The recipient will then be recognized at an Appleton Education Foundation event slated to take place in April or May 2010.

In addition to the award, the honoree will receive a $1,000 monetary award to further a leadership endeavor/project or to direct to his or her nonprofit of choice.

For more information about nominating someone for this award, contact Julie Krause, AEF executive director at (920) 832-1517 or visit www.appletoneducationfoundation.org. for a complete nomination form.
